Another Review: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds At T In The Park

Rock legend Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds mixed the new with the old to send the T in the Park crowd soaring on Saturday.

The mercurial Mancunian illustrated why there’s life after Oasis, while simultaneously indulging the baying Main Stage crowd with a few of the tunes that helped secure his status as an enduring musical icon.

Newer material recorded since infamously parting company with sibling and former band-mate Liam, such as the effortlessly catchy AKA What A Life and If I Had A Gun, was greeted with cheers by the mud-clad masses.

Dream On, AKA Broken Arrow and the anthemic Stranded On the Wrong Beach – all taken from the group’s first album – also proved popular, although there was a feeling amongst those gathered that the ringmaster was delaying the inevitable bout of nostalgia that they were craving for.

One minor technical hitch with a guitar aside, this was a composed, if slightly understated, performance from a mature frontman – with the only glimpse of a raised temperature coming when he swore at audience members who baulked at his decision to dedicate a track some fans of his beloved Manchester City elsewhere in the crowd.
The memorable set reached a crescendo as a sequence including the likes of Oasis classics Talk Tonight and Half The World Away closed with a wonderful version of Don’t Look Back in Anger.

Headliners The Stone Roses, who were next on the bill, were given a tough act to follow.
